The Mauretania
Cobh, Co. Cork. Located on Scott Square, just off Main St., The Mauretania is named for ocean liner built in 1906 for the Cunard Line. She sailed from Queenstown (Cobh) to New York on her maiden voyage. Carrying 1,138 – 3rd class passengers, many of them Irish immigrants. In 1915 she was converted to a troopship until after the Armistice in 1918. Refitted for passengers in 1919, she was damaged by fire in 1921 and then again rebuilt. In 1935 she made her last voyage to Rosyth where she was scrapped. Her Captain, until 1928 was Arthur Henry Rostron, who once commanded the ship Carpathia, the ship that rescued the Titanic survivors.
